Houses

Looking at houses in in Between. It is frakkin expensive to live there. That is all.

Still worried

I think I am in the middle of an argument that second and third have about another thing they are working on. Second has done a ton of work on analysis and a little on writing - third was involved in arranging for some samples and evaluating conclusions. That seems pretty clear to me.

But second came in yesterday and was quite frustrated with third. To the point that I was tempted to say "Wow, you seem really angry at third." But I didn't because I didn't think it would help.

Blerg.

Authorship

Dealing with a bit of a problem at work. Those of you who are academic types, how do you handle authorship on a paper? What do you think is a reasonable contribution from a first author? A second? A third?

My second and third on this bad boy are in disagreement.

And I forgot...

We got Offspring biopsy results. It's not cancer.

And today...

Now we are thinking about how I would be commuting from a central point to where Offspring's bus picks her up anyway. So maybe we keep the place in the right county, she rides in with me and I get her on the bus, and get her at the end of the day...

As long as we pay a power bill at the old place, it all works. Bun can start school at the great new district in the middle in a year.

Contacted a realtor in the middle.

Stay tuned.

Today I'm thinking about...

my 25th High School Reunion.

Spouse said I should go, although it's a big trip and I don't keep in touch with but two people.

Also thinking of "friending" my nemesis from High School. Funny how all the old relationships/feelings come to the front!

Maybe it never gets easier...

So we're going to R1 (and they offered FIVE TIMES the amount in moving money that NewSchool did, even though the move will be literally 40 miles!). The next big decision is where we will live. Offspring had a rough fall, adjusting to both middle school and going to Hogwarts - the highly gifted program in big district. But she did it, and is both happy and attached to her school.

So we could let Spouse go to R-1 during the week for the next two years while the girls and I stay here. This is Offspring's preference.

There is a GREAT school district between NewSchool and R-1. But a) even though they have a similar program, Offspring has to be enrolled in the district for at least a year to qualify and the housing prices are ginormous. We'll be back into a mortgage, which doesn't thrill me.

The other district in between is pretty good, it looks like (has an IB high school, etc.), but less so for kids like Offspring. It has been really hard to get specific info on this, which is kind of frustrating, but looking at the gifted ed plan they filed with the state, it's not as good as where she is.

I lived

So I just concluded the 3rd conference/meeting/obligation in a row. I'm on my way to a family reunion at the old homestead in a more central state. Just seeing the mountains made me so happy - let's go summer!

The pendulum knows all...

So tonight we had Offspring's birthday celebration. We usually are traveling at her mid-summer birthday, so we try to do something before school gets out. We've done a big party a couple of times, but usually do something more manageable. Today, we took her and two of her friends out for a movie and pizza.

One of her friends is from a family where her mom literally grew up on a commune and is a practicing Wiccan (goes to rituals on the solstice, does herbal healing, etc.). And that's fine. We listened to a podcast and read some articles with Offspring about Wicca and what Wiccans believe and do, trying to find a variety of sources to avoid as much bias as we could.

Offspring's friend wanted her to go through this book with her, which we discouraged, telling Offspring we wouldn't expect Offspring to ask her friend to read the epistles of Paul with her, either.

Tonight, Offspring's friend brought her a divining crystal that's supposed to predict the future based on the way it swings when you hold it. (Back and forth for no, circle for yes). So that was interesting. After we dropped the friend off, I asked Offspring if she thought the crystal could really answer questions about the future. I got the "Mom!" with the emphasis that only pre-teens can give. Then I asked her if she thought her friend believed it could. She thought for a minute, and answered "I guess she does. Huh!" Then she went off to play with her sister.

It's late

Just back from the second conference for the evening.

A colleague of mine was an organizer, and the dean offered to pay for any basketweaving faculty who wanted to go, so I took that as a hint that I should (and he was there tonight, so I got my appropriate brownie points).

I don't want to be totally negative, so I will say I made a few good contacts and got to really piss someone off today by pointing out something obvious that he a) hadn't realized and b) had trouble aligning with his world view. The rest has been astounding crap.

If you ever saw Mystery Men, you might remember The Sphinx, who would make profound statements that were either obvious or meaningless. On Community, they said "The only way we can stop stopping ourselves is by beginning to start starting." I feel like that is the level of discourse here. The "rules" for one of the breakout sessions today included "Whoever is here is who is supposed to be here." and ""When it starts, it is time to begin. And when it ends, it's over." I'm not kidding. Also, my colleague got up in the middle of the closing session today and recited an original poem about seagulls. Also, not kidding.

In other news, finally got a written offer from R-1. It would be a little better for the family if Spouse went to OddSchool (better place to live and commute for both of us), but they had to know today. Spouse e-mailed them to say he had to take a different job because it was a permanent position. Perhaps, they'll counter, but I doubt it, so I think he'll be at R-1 this Fall.

Back, briefly

Sorry for the sparse posting. The whole family has been out of town at a thingie Spouse and I work at. It's very busy for us (I don't usually get back until after 11 in the evenings), so no time to post there.

It went well, and people we did like a lot at PrettyGood are heavily involved, so it was nice to see them.

I am stupid, so tomorrow, I start another conference. It's local, so I can sleep in my own bed, but it also has long hours. Then Sunday I leave for a week of training that I need, but I am sure I'll be completely wasted by the end of all of this.
